La Grande Roue Orthochromatique… by Max Ernst
Max Ernst's La Grande Roue Orthochromatique (The Orthochromatic Grand Wheel) is a quintessential example of the artist's surrealist vision, blending dreamlike imagery with precise, almost photographic detail. Created in 1921, this work is part of Ernst's exploration of the unconscious, featuring a mysterious, mechanical wheel adorned with cryptic symbols and figures. The title's reference to 'orthochromatic' a type of photographic film sensitive to all colors except red hints at Ernst's fascination with the interplay between reality and illusion.
This fine art print captures every intricate detail of the original, from the delicate line work to the subtle tonal variations. The composition invites viewers into a world where logic dissolves and imagination reigns, a hallmark of Ernst's pioneering role in the Surrealist movement.
